Background

Rapid technology growth has seen higher resolution image sensors emerge almost every year. New cameras based on fixed, inflexible platforms quickly become obsolete, despite offering cutting edge technology on launch. URSA's versatile architecture lets users upgrade lens mount and sensor, ensuring the camera evolves on pace with new technology, prolonging its life and safeguarding user investment.

History and Achievements

To design a high-end digital film camera immune to obsolescence caused by rapidly evolving image sensor technology to deliver real, lasting value for users.

Designers' Thoughts

URSA is a professional tool with an uncompromising aesthetic driven by performance and reliability, inspiring confidence in demanding production environments. Typified by interlocking panels, distinctive shadow gaps and exposed fixings, it deliberately reflects the potential of URSAs modular format, and reinforces the user's ability to remove sub-assemblies for upgrading as technology evolves.

Significance of Planning and Development

Blackmagic Design's core value is to empower creative people with accessible technology. Typical high-end cinema cameras are expensive, bulky and complex. At $6000, URSA is the first affordable way of creating professional content, delivering feature-film quality Ultra HD images, future-proof architecture and fully integrated set of production tools at a level accessible to independent filmmakers.

Creative originality

URSA is the world's first camera to allow users to easily upgrade lens mounts and image sensors. This was achieved by isolating complex optical elements within a removable turret module containing the image sensor, lens mount and lens control connections. Electronically and thermally coupled to the main body, the turret can be easily disengaged by removing four fasteners. The unique, interchangeable turret module also offers filmmakers the freedom to choose their preferred lens mount platform, with industry standard PL lens mount and EF lens mount options. This means that whether they are utilising industry leading cinema optics or inexpensive consumer lenses common to DSLR cameras, users can leverage the incredible image quality, and state of the art image processing available in URSA.

Evaluation Comments

This is a high-end digital cinema camera from the same company that has introduced numerous innovative products in the industrial video equipment industry. With a built-in large 10-in. monitor, it is possible to film in 4K while checking details. It is also unique in that it is possible to upgrade not only the lens but also the image sensor.
