Background

Hengchun Peninsula has historically been home to multiple ethnic groups. Singing was one of the ways for them to entertain and to bring people together. The songs they sing constitute records of the evolutionary changes and collective consciousness of the groups throughout different eras. Modernization of late 20th century kickstarted an acceleration of social change in Taiwan, resulting in a rapid growth of urban populations. Life at the countryside became less favorable as it was considered poor and undeveloped. The younger generation prefers urban life-oriented tunes to traditional folk tunes which they may associate with negative social image. As the younger generations changed their lifestyle, this change began to phase-out the folk music from people’s lives.

History and Achievements

The goal of the festival is to preserve the traditional folk music which celebrates the diversity of local culture and to foster cultural identity. The festival consists of four elements: 1) Folk music singing contest - encourages local students to learn local folk music; 2) Concert featuring professional musicians and local traditional folk singers. We invite mainstream singers of various genres to collaborate with local traditional singers to make new arrangements to the old folk songs; 3) Theatre play to present the life stories of people in the past for the younger generation to understand the social background of their ancestors; 4) International world music artists demonstrate and open dialogue about how they fuse their ethnic voice with pop culture to make their music heard.

Evaluation Comments

The traditional folk music festival in the Hengchun Peninsula of Taiwan, where many ethnic groups live, was renewed in 2018. The host organization was unified. And the festival reached its present form to get nearly 50,000 participants together. This is a cultural festival not only to showcase the history, but also for people including youth and children to actively enjoy through the participation of various artists.
