Background

This renovation project focuses on revitalizing a 40-year-old townhouse characterized by its elongated and narrow layout. There are many challenges including water leakage, humidity, rusting corrugated metal structures and inadequate lighting. Moreover, its proximity to neighboring houses on either side poses concerns about sound insulation and privacy. In response to these issues, adopted on a holistic approach, such as partially demolishing partitions, reconfiguring the spatial layout, introducing waterproofing measures and reinforcing the structure. By selecting non-toxic, formaldehyde-free latex paint and other eco-conscious materials, minimizing our ecological footprint, and apply heat-reflective coatings to sloping roof panels to decrease the need for air conditioning.

History and Achievements

The rooftop design incorporates skylights to emulate a courtyard ambiance, illuminating the interior without the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours, and offering additional room for drying clothes on the third floor. The ground floor was first elevated with a cement foundation before tiling to mitigate humidity and dampness. The open-plan layout seamlessly integrates the living room, dining area and kitchen, the expansive ceiling height on the ground floor also connects to the open recreation area on the second floor, fostering interaction among family members. A suspended pipe system is utilized for the water supply, efficiently delivering water from the rooftop to the first, second and third floors, meeting the occupants' daily needs.

The project is 244.6 square meters with 4 bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and 3 bathrooms. Ceramic tiles, iron parts, glass, melamine board, system board, wooden floor, painted corrugated board, latex paint, outdoor paint, thermal insulation paint.

Jury's Evaluation

Evaluation Comments

The building's exterior design is clearly coherent with its interior layout. The facade features a minimalistic design with only two window openings strategically aligned with an interior linear skylight. This design approach creates natural lighting in the narrow and elongated interior space, offering a bright and pleasing atmosphere. Integrating the facade's fenestration with the skylight enhances the spatial quality of the interior, allowing for framed views of lush greenery and a sense of openness despite the narrow plot.
