Background

Within modern coffee culture, especially in countries like Japan, our manual design aligns with an appreciation for traditional methods, while the eco-conscious approach echoes with the modern day desire for sustainability. By embracing diverse influences, the Presso SmartShot becomes a universal tool, offering craftsmanship, environmental mindfulness, and a diverse coffee ritual with every cup. Customers can escape capsule constraints and choose their favourite coffee; from supermarkets to farmers' markets. Used coffee grounds can be returned to the earth without any processing needed. ROK's commitment to innovative design broadens its market, ensuring coffee lovers of all ages and strengths can now relish a superior, well extracted coffee while minimising waste and upholding quality.

History and Achievements

We have been making our non-electric lever-arm espresso machine for over 20 years, and the burden of a great shot of espresso has remained upon the user and their ability to dial in the correct coffee fineness as well as water pressure within the chamber. Over the past few years, we have developed the SmartShot technology, a spring-loaded mechanism within the lever arms combined with a SmartShot basket within the portafilter, and have packaged that within a familiar design. By developing this technology, we aim to reduce the barrier to entry for potential coffee enthusiasts, democratise great espresso for all—strong, weak, old, or young—and finally to increase our efforts in reducing the waste associated with at-home espresso, generally caused by the capsule coffee market.

Jury's Evaluation

Evaluation Comments

The extraction pressure and time greatly affect the flavor of espresso, but an electric machine automatically controls these with a pump. In the latest product from this brand, which has remained committed to non-electric espresso extraction, a spring fixed to the handle continues to pull down the piston once the lever has been pressed, automatically maintaining constant pressure and extraction time in the chamber. Since electricity is not used, espresso can be extracted relatively easily anywhere and anytime, without worrying about the operating noise of a pump. The exquisite movement of highly textured parts is pleasing to watch.
