Ten years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, during which the owner lost his home, this house was rebuilt and moved to a higher ground. An atrium with an opening 4,7 meters high runs through the center of the building and connects the mountains in the south and the sea in the north.

It has been 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the discussion for and against moving houses to higher ground is still continuing. In this situation, the person who built this house determined to move by himself and start a new life there. This house built for that purpose is responding to this decision in an impressive way. As if celebrating the axis line running between the mountain and the ocean, the space spreading from the hall in the center of the house gives a strong impression. Moreover, the flexible plan that looks at the future plan for a private B&B business can be a good basis of a livelihood here. This is an excellent example presenting the power of architecture in disaster recovery.
