背景

Cities are facing a crisis. Merely a century ago, our streets were primarily social spaces. The arrival of the automobile rapidly changed the way we moved, lived, and interacted. The car brought freedom of mobility to many, but it also impacted our urban environments in unexpected ways. Private cars are amongst the most underused assets. An average car sits idle 94 percent of the day, often occupying precious urban land. As urbanization continues and cities densify, urban planners believe that personal car ownership will choke our cities. Cities are trying to reduce their carbon emissions while dealing with increasing volumes of traffic. Preferences are also changing from ownership of goods towards access to services. More young adults think that owning a car is a waste of time and money.

経緯とその成果

Whim is designed to be a compelling alternative to car ownership. Our research showed that mobility needs are highly contextual and change from moment to moment. A single mode such as a car is an inefficient way of satisfying different needs. Our design process involved co-creation and service design workshops with Helsinki region residents. We tested design prototypes with smaller user groups in real city usage for almost a year, and iterated based on the learnings. After launching publicly in 2017, over 75000 users have completed over 4 million rides using the service. Whim is designed for multimodality - users combine public transport with bikes (42% rides) and taxis (3x more). Some even sold their car because they didn't use it anymore. Our design vision is slowly becoming reality.

仕様

Service is available on both iOS and Android mobile platforms for general public. Service is currently active in Helsinki (Finland), Birmingham (UK), and Antwerp (Belgium), with more markets in Europe and Asia planned for launch.
