Outline

Kasuien designed by Togo Murano is a masterpiece of sukiya architecture with impressive layers of thin roofs, but it deteriorated after 60 years of construction. While famous postwar architecture that has yet to be culturally evaluated has been destroyed and it is said to be especially difficult to renew wooden buildings, seismic retrofit and renovation leading to the future were realized.

Evaluation

The masterpiece of postwar architecture has been inherited to the present and future in the best possible way. In terms of restoration of the architecture of that time, the exterior of the building and the garden were completely repaired and restored, in addition to dismantling and removing the upper part of another building, which was blocking the view, in order to restore the view from the inside to the state at the time of construction. As for the guest rooms, they are greatly improved to have seismic retrofitting and to make them easy to use as modern accommodations. There are various stances that designers can take when they do not or cannot leave the original design as it is, but here, the design was made while always asking how Mr. Murano would design it by interpreting Mr. Togo Murano’s design ideas and techniques. The situation realized here is clearly different from a new interior simply decorated in a preserved building. Even though almost every item has been replaced by new ones, it provides a feeling of naturalness in its atmosphere as if it had been in this condition from the beginning. We would like to express our respect for the high ambition of the operator, the high level of skill of the contractor, and the aesthetics and outstanding design ability of the designer. We also hope that the momentum to preserve, regenerate, and reuse such buildings will further increase.
