Planning of a hotel in western part of Beppu, featuring reddish massive concrete walls. The color and rough texture recall the surface of mountains in the surrounding area. Its form, which is sometimes seen overwhelming like a cantilever, is not derived from the functional requirements of the architecture. Rather, it seems to follow the principle of autonomous existence as an object that is not affected by human intentions, like the surrounding natural terrain. Its lasting appearance beyond the changing demands of society, such as natural land, guarantees the hotel a site-specific value that can only be appreciated here. In the hotel, many works of art featuring the land/site are displayed, and the composition of the land/site and the human beings who live while interpreting it is expressed through the relationship between the art and the hotel just like the site. This is the architecture as a modeling object found by interpreting the land and its overwhelming existence. We highly rated this as a precious approach in recent years showing the fundamental power of the architecture.
