Outline

The plan is simple: a public bath on the first floor and a residence on the second floor. The owner said, "It was very difficult to take a bath after the Kumamoto earthquake". In Japan, where natural disasters are common, this is a new prototype of a house that, though small, will help prepare the community.

Evaluation

The idea of transforming the first floor of a private house into a bath house is extraordinary. The family made a further drastic decision not to have a private bathroom in their housing area on the second floor. They use the downstairs public bath. This project was started by a structural engineer who came up with this idea based on his own experience having trouble finding a bath during the earthquake disaster in Kumamoto. He also started to wish to revive the bath house culture which had disappeared from the city. This is very persuasive story, as it is based on his true experience. We would like to express our appreciation for this exemplary idea to use a private house for the benefit of the public.
