Evaluation

Taiwan’s history is a history of being governed. If you go back through history, you can find where each ruler has left traces of their own culture in each era. Nevertheless, many renovation projects over the last decade have placed design demonstrating a certain nostalgia for the period of Japanese governance front and center. We have also seen cases where a distaste for clinging to the period of Japanese rule has resulted in an attempt to transform such elements into a modern design. This project is supported by a sense of balance that tips neither one way nor the other. Houses and walls dating back to the period of Japanese colonial rule have been carefully restored, while modern landscape design has been used to cover them. It would be fair to say that this is a well-balanced example of renovation in Taiwan, in the sense that it restores its historical heritage, without overly lapsing into nostalgia.
