- Outline
Dejima was the only places which connected Japan to the outside world.Nagasaki city is restoring it from 1951 and planned to rebuild a modern bridge. Its restrained design is influenced by the material context and the intention to build modestly in this place of historical importance. The bridge is clamped at the main land abutment, and statically works as a cantilever of 33.3m under self weight, avoiding large foundations on Dejima. We also carefully planned the process of design and construction together with the local community.A bridge was erected with great public attentions. After completion, it is continuing activities to maintain the bridge with citizens. We believe this will foster people's attachment to the infrastructure. This is the total design of modern infrastructure that we did.
