デザインコンセプト

It aims to raise public awareness on socio-environmental problems by using food as the tool and the action of exchange to develop the sense of community and demonstrate the value of sustainability.

背景

Organised by Oi! and the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, "XCHANGE" aims to adopt design as a means to facilitate social innovation. It invites the community to review, discuss and rethink the often overlooked socio-environmental problems in Hong Kong and thus to develop new strategies and initiate changes for social betterment.

デザイナーの想い

The project sets out to raise public awareness on the daily challenge of 3,600 tons of food waste in Hong Kong and to promote the spirit of green-eating. More importantly, it aims at leveraging the power of the youth to explore the intriguing relationship between food and society and inspiring people to consume wisely.

企画・開発の意義

The project advocates the idea of exchange that surpasses monetary transactions and inherits the practice of barter, through which the needs and offers from different sectors of the society could be discovered and connected. The project vividly brings the concepts of art and design closer to the community by converting them into the most common everyday scenario in the setting of an art space.

創意工夫

The project turns an art space into an open kitchen for community exchange. Everyone is welcome to bring surplus food ingredients, utensils or secret recipes in exchange for a cup of seasonal drink at the kitchen. Collected ingredients will then be used in the Saturday Feast, a weekly cooking demonstration programme that focuses on different aspects of local culture and folk wisdom, such as the Traditional Chinese 24 Solar Terms. Designers, industrialists, leaders of social enterprise and members from other sectors are invited to share their practices on upcycling, co-creation, place-making and so forth, attaining mutual exchange of professional knowledge as well as life experiences.

仕様

The public engaged project in a community kitchen at Oi! started in Aug 2015. It aims to explore the socio-environmental problems and initiate changes through organising a series of programs dedicated to topics on food and design, including upcycling, co-creation, place-making and maker movement.
