"Principal Implementation Regulations for the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2025" stipulate the outline of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2025 project. In accordance with the principal implementation regulations, various relevant regulations are prescribed.

Screening perspectives

Whether tangible or intangible, GOOD DESIGN AWARD evaluates the quality of things that people create to achieve certain ideals and purposes as design. The jury members will consider the following "screening perspectives" to determine whether or not the entries are good designs based on a composite of various views of design context, purpose, process, and outcome.

  • Whether due considerations, including usability, understandability, friendliness, etc., are given to users

  • Whether various considerations, including safety, security, environment, physically weak persons, etc., are given to maintain the credibility

  • Whether the design gains the sympathy of users

  • Whether the design has attractiveness and induces users’ creativity

  • Whether issues are skillfully solved by using new technology and materials or through creativity

  • Whether the entry is reasonably designed or planned with appropriate technology, method, and quality

  • Whether the entry contributes to the creation of a new industry or business

  • Whether the entry contributes to the creation of new cultures, such as a new method, lifestyle, communication, etc.

  • Whether the entry contributes to the realization of the sustainable society

  • Whether the entry suggests new value, such as a new method, concept, style, etc. to society

  • Whether the entry proposes a highly sustainable solution from medium- and long-term perspectives.

  • Whether the entry represents continual improvements in accordance with the times.

Project Policies for 2025

In theGOOD DESIGN AWARD2025, following last year, Mr. Seiichi Saito waswelcomed as Chairperson, with Mr. Jin Kuramoto and Ms. Yuko Nagayama asVice Chairpersons. In the screening process, under the theme “A Small Step,Design Leaps,” which was derived from last year’s Focused Issues, in additionto thescreeningperspectives of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD (human,industrial, social, and time), the evaluation questionedwhether the designwas approached with the will to take a step forward without being bound byconventional practices or preconceptions. The main points are as follows.

Discovery of Outstanding Designs in Japan and Abroad and Promotionof Applications

During the application period, numerous briefing sessions and consultationmeetings were held both in Japan and overseas, motivating potentialapplicants. In mainland China, cooperation with local media continued, withadvertising carried out across multiplechannels,including social media and web ads, to encourage applications. In Taiwan, since 2022, information andtalks on excellent Japanese designs have been disseminated through a well-established podcast channel, contributing to a better understanding of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD.

Strengthening the Information Dissemination Function Through OwnedMedia

“.g Good DesignJournal,” the information section of the GOOD DESIGNAWARD official website,launched in 2023, has been serially introducing thescreening process as well as award winners and their designs. In addition,the official accounts on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook,andnote have continued to grow in follower numbers year by year. Throughtimely and appropriate content updates, theGOOD DESIGN AWARD andaward-winning works have been communicated as something more familiarto general users, further enhancing the media’s transmission power.

Positioning of the GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD and Change in theSelection Method for the GOOD DESIGN GRAND AWARD

Starting this year, the “GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD” has been positionedas the top of each category, with one selected from each of the 20 units.The “GOOD DESIGN GRAND AWARD,” based on the principle of choosingthe most outstanding design among the year’s award-winning works, wasdetermined from the 20gold awardwinners in a specialscreeningsession inwhich only professional jury members participated. In continuation from lastyear, in addition to thegrand award, a voting event titled “OurFavorite GMark,” in which all visitors to the award exhibition could vote, was also held,providing an opportunity to foster broader interest in excellent design.


Types of Awards

GOOD DESIGN AWARD is presented to entries recognized as excellent designs from among all entries, and then 100 winners with superior designs are chosen as GOOD DESIGN BEST100.
Next, the Judging Committee chooses winners of the GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD and GOOD FOCUS AWARD as well as finalists for the GOOD DESIGN GRAND AWARD from the GOOD DESIGN BEST100.
The winner of the GOOD DESIGN GRAND AWARD is chosen from the finalists for that award voting by the jury members, winners, and others.

最初的一步,拓展設計

設計,究竟從何而來? 被創造出的設計,由誰孕育?如何進入社會? 在本年度的GOOD DESIGN AWARD中,我們希望更深入探討這些問題。

我一直以來主張:不可將「物的設計」(如:產品設計)與「事的設計」(如:社會設計)分割開來。每個「物的設計」背後都承載著故事,即「事的設計」;而「事的設計」在輸出時,也往往伴隨著眾多「物的設計」。過去十年,我一直參與GOOD DESIGN AWARD的評審,並深刻體會到這一觀點適用於所有類型的設計。今年將其作為GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2025的評審委員長寄語道出,在於一直以來被二元對立思維討論的「物的設計」與「事的設計」,終於開始被整合,並以更融合的方式加以思考。 本年度的主題「最初的一步,拓展設計」源自去年FOCUSED ISSUES項目的討論。2023年是「具有OUTCOME的設計」;2024年則是「保持勇氣和有機性的設計」。在此基礎上,我們進一步思考未來應前往的方向,以及實現這一目標所需的過程,探尋當下應有的設計形態。

回顧過去眾多獲獎作品,我們發現所有設計的源頭都離不開創作者的信念,以及推動其實現強大且紮實的過程。在現有系統已趨於飽和、傳統公式受到挑戰的當下,各個領域都迫切需要具備新視角、真正符合時代需求的美感和靈活的設計。換句話說,我們已經從「設計追隨時代(以市場營銷為核心)」的階段,邁向「設計作為創造更美好事物的行動,引領社會發展的新紀元」。

「最初的一步」意味著尊重並肯定那些帶著熱情、勇敢探索社會與設計接點的個人;而「拓展設計」則象徵著企業與團體共同尊重這一探索,並匯聚各自的能力,共同打造更具影響力的設計。

希望各位在提交作品時,不僅關注最終的設計成果,還能充分表達成果誕生的背景與過程中的設計思維。評審委員會全體成員期待與大家相見,共同探索更多精彩的設計。

耕耘意志

今年的GOOD DESIGN AWARD拉開了帷幕。

我時常認為,設計是尋找人、事物與環境之間更佳和諧關係的行動。這種和諧的形態,會隨著社會背景與技術變革而不斷演進。GOOD DESIGN AWARD就像一場瞬間有「Good」迴響的運動,在運動中反映多元化的社會狀態,同步映照出當時代的價值觀。

構想未來,為創作者帶來極大樂趣的同時,也需要傾注龐大的能量。許多具有突破性的研究與創意,最終能以產品或服務的形式著陸,並在社會中普及應用,往往依賴於企業與組織良好的團隊協作。但追溯源頭,這一切都始於某位個人的信念,即「最初的一步」。是個人的勇氣與堅定的意志提出了創意,隨後企業與組織將其接納並展開有機協作,最終推動至社會,形成廣泛影響力。在評審中,我們希望能深入挖掘這些個人意志的價值,同時關注企業和組織如何將其發展並呈現給世界。

「意志」的視點、視野、視角同樣至關重要。我十分關注創作者與企業的理念是如何耕耘,並發展成為設計的創意。為了更好地回應參評者的熱情,並深入理解創作者的意志,我們也在不斷改進評審方法,以適應社會與設計關係的變化。我希望GOOD DESIGN AWARD能成為衡量時代價值觀的一把「標尺」,也期待今年能見證更多優秀的設計。

將這一步化為機遇

過去兩年的寄語中,我以「設計的力量」(2023)與「設計力量的方向」(2024)為主題,借助GOOD DESIGN AWARD深入思考議題,並實際見到設計力量對社會所帶來的影響。

2025年度GOOD DESIGN AWARD的主題是「最初的一步,拓展設計」,蘊含著我們對設計如何從起點出發,並不斷擴展其影響力的期待。在去年FOCUSED ISSUES項目的討論中,我曾以「影響力」與「融合力」這兩個關鍵詞來表現創意的發起者,以及各自發揮專長並推動創意實現的執行者的兩個不同角色。任何項目的實現,都是這兩種力量共同作用的結果。去年眾多獲獎作品正是這種良性互動的典範。

距離1970年大阪世博會已經過了55個年頭,今年即將迎來第二次大阪・關西世博會。上一屆世博會被譽為「奇蹟的世博」,許多年輕建築師、藝術家、創意人參與其中,以對未來的美好想像塑造出各式作品,並獲得廣泛共鳴。而今年的世博會,自籌備階段起便備受爭議,人們不斷探討其在當代社會中的意義。然而,日本作為東道主,已勇敢邁出「最初的一步」。如何賦予這一步意義,並將其化為機遇,最終取決於我們這些參與其中的人的努力。

GOOD DESIGN AWARD的獲獎作品,都是不輕言放棄的成果。而分享這些作品的過程,能夠鼓勵其他即將邁出行動的人。希望大家能夠將自己的設計過程和故事分享給更多的人,孕育出新的力量,今年也歡迎更多朋友一同踴躍參加。
