Outline: This is a former JR East Japan company dormitory, renovated into a multi-generational residence with 24 family rental units and 112 share-house units. To realize a rich rurban lifestyle on this site, which enjoys both urban and rural benefits, our design enables spontaneous interactions among people via shared fields and through passages, while also achieving a sophisticated interior design.

Evaluation

This is a project where a company dormitory was renovated into rental housing for families and a shared house. We rated it as a project having many implications towards the stock-type society in the future. First, attention was paid to factors constituting the surrounding environment. Then the project was designed to be adopted softly to the existing landscape rather than a sudden new construction, which contributes to creation of a streetscape offering a spreading and comfortable feel. In addition, benches and fields are carefully placed in the existing building and its exterior area to secure optimal distances among inhabitants, with which a kitchen of the interior area is developed to be connected. This project is very excellent in overwriting the existing building.
