Evaluation

Against a backdrop of increasingly dilapidated school facilities and budget cuts due to declining birthrates, how can user-friendly design that is meaningful for both teachers and students be achieved? The biggest feature of this initiative led by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and the Taiwan Design Research Institute is the fact that it has been designed as an education project in which both teachers and students participate. It represents a shift away from education based on finding prepared answers toward education focused on identifying and solving problems for oneself, thus promoting a wide-ranging intellectual capacity that encompasses aesthetics and design. In conjunction with this reform of the educational curriculum, teachers and students work with architects and designers to create a plan for the redesign of their own school. As well as serving as an opportunity for dynamic education, it achieved user-centered renovations that nonetheless maintained control over the budget. Japan has much to learn from this initiative, which expanded at a speed quite uncharacteristic of government-led projects.
