Outline: The 1st Romantic Road 3 Arts Festival took place at various locations across Taipei and 9 Hakka settlements spanning 150 kilometers on Taiwan Romantic Road 3. Hakka Affairs Council invited Wu Han-chung as Design Director to bring the public to experience the Hakka culture from a new perspective. It is the largest art festival in Taiwan, and one of the widest coverages in the world.

Evaluation

As the language of the Hakka ethnic group has not been granted the status of an official language and part of their culture has been subject to discrimination, the number of young people who identify as Hakka has been declining. While addressing the serious theme of the culture of a minority ethnic group that has suffered discrimination, this initiative achieved success as Taiwan’s largest art event, attracting 700,000 visitors. A total of 70 artists from six countries participated in this festival, which took place at various locations spanning 150 km, resulting in a huge economic effect and powerful media exposure for Hakka culture.
