背景

The Hakkas were in Northern China before migrating down south. Today, they are found in widely scattered locations in Southeast Asia. Although Hakka is the 2nd largest ethnic group, after years of cultural blending, a distinct Hakka identity is fading away in Taiwan. Through integrating cultural experiences into tourism, the festival aimed to topple the stereotype about the Hakka culture while displaying the idyllic lifestyle on the route. The objective of the festival was to encourage local residents to create arts and rediscover wonderful stories in Hakka settlements through the lens of artists. Visitors explored Hakka cities on their own as if they were on a scavenger hunt. They would not spend time in museum buildings, but rather discovered artworks in daily-life fields around towns.

経緯とその成果

The Romantic Route 3 Arts Festival encompasses three themes: highways, waterways, and trails, which are intertwined with time to form a glamorous avenue, telling the stories of small towns along the Provincial Highway 3, the tales of irrigation canals in Hakka villages, and the history of Raknus Selu Trails. 70 artists from 6 countries were invited to create on-site and exhibit their artworks during the two-month event. They determined to raise the brand-new profile of Romantic Route 3, as well as the Hakka culture, at home and abroad through design and arts. Not only an arts event, this festival also was a communication & co-creation platform designed and constructed for community residents, designers, artists and governments.
