Rather than merely erecting a new building, this redevelopment project focused on the Nobeoka Station area created a new public space, while building relationships with the community through several workshops involving local citizens. In addition to the development of a waiting room, the program included a Starbucks on the first floor, along with a shop selling local specialties and a kids’ space with services for children, and a branch of Tsutaya bookstore on the second floor, helping to make the area in front of the station more lively. The architectural plan kept the height of the first-floor ceiling low, but provided a more relaxed space on the second floor with a ceiling height of 3.9 m, creating an elegant composition and proportions. Particularly worthy of note is the fact that it respects the simple design of the old station building, which dated back to the days of Japanese National Railways, maintaining that heritage in a contemporary design. Currently, examples of outstanding contemporary architecture are proliferating in Japan’s provincial cities faster than in Tokyo, and this is one example symbolizing this trend.
