Outline: This is a plan for the renovation and extension of the oldest public museum architecture in Japan.The goal has been set naturally:conservation and utilization.Two opposite ends of the spectrum are what to achieve by preserving the museum's most genuine posture and responding to the modern requirements.These architectural enhancements also led activating the flow of people in the surrounding area.

Evaluation

This plan for the renovation and extension of a public art museum founded in 1933 involved making use of a building that is a leading example of Imperial Crown Style architecture. Excavating a plaza at the front and installing the entrance in the basement enabled the architects to make full use of the historical facade, while enhancing accessibility by allowing users to pass across the emphatic east-west axis within the building. This has increased the appeal of not only the facility itself, but also the culture and recreation quarter of Okazaki as a whole. While the purpose of the project was not preservation or restoration, it has explored what is required of an art museum in a modern city and led to an excellent answer for the present day.
