Outline: The structure of Xinfu Market is renovated by the Taipei City Market Administration Office. JUT Foundation embarked on the reuse and the management of the market spaces and the place is fully operational in 2017. With its material contexts preserved, U-mkt transfigures the role of a traditional market into a place for food culture education and a common ground for local affairs discussion.

Evaluation

The "U-mkt" is a learning paradigm of community culture revival in an old town and a successful reconstruction of a historical building! This work preserves the U-shaped form of the original market, a historical building constructed during the Japanese colonial period and hidden in the old Wanhua district of Taipei City, and spatially transforms it with simplicity and innovation into a public area stretching from the surrounding Xinfu Market to launch the fusion and vitality of the entire old community!
