The shopping mall, once built in the city center and shut down as the times have changed, is converted and rebirthed as a new municipal library. Taking advantage of the characteristics of commercial space, a pleasant shopping street and various storefront, we proposed public space where everyone can visit and choose own places to stay. In collaboration with the local furniture industry association, wooden box furniture has been developed to display books flexibly. Expanding the notion of conventional library, it aims to become a regional hub for the local community, in the form of new type of public facility inheriting the “genes” of library, with editing department called “press studio,” new index search mechanism as well as studios for various activities.
