Each letter of Japanese alphabet has two forms called Hiragana and Katakana. This game uses chips each has Hiragana and Katakana of the same letter, on its both sides. For each of 50 letters in Japanese alphabet, a chip is provided which has black Hiragana on white in front face and white Katakana on black in back face. Like Othello, this design enables intuitive recognition of win / lose by color contrast. The Japan taste design of the game board has embossed grids on white coloring.
