A bright grotto, a contemporary abstraction of nature, to refresh shoppers amidst delicate garments and dazzling commodities, is the design concept for the sustainable toilet.

背景

Situated in the commercial center of Guangzhou China, the TaiKoo Hui is a mixed use complex incorporating a shopping mall, two Grade-A office towers, a hotel, and serviced apartment. The shopping mall receives tens of thousands of visitors daily, and its amenity facilities require an upgrade. The new sustainable toilet is located at MU Level of the shopping mall.

The sustainable design toilet aims to become the role model of sustainability in the commercial & retail sector. The design aims to tie back to nature, formally as well as environmentally. Sustainability, spatial sculpting and human comfort drive the whole design. Toilet, as a mundane type of space for daily use, could be design with surprise and educational meaning.

Minimum alterations are made to the original efficient toilet layout, to minimize structural and piping alteration. It consists of three corridors of cubicles, washbasins & urinals. Wall furring was removed, the FOUND round and tilted square columns are expressed and painted to form a homogeneous white mass to engage the space with unique shape and angle that hint the underlining structures.

This project, a sustainable toilet in the public realm, is the pioneer in the commercial and public setting. Unlike the conventional sustainable toilet with only environmental sanitary wares installed, this project demonstrates a complete and an integral consideration on sustainability in terms of design concept and overall material selection. The green GROTTO idea of the toilet and baby care room is the main idea during inception stage that ties all elements together, including GRG material selection, demolished material recycle, water-saving sanitary wares and LED lighting selection etc. The green wall is irrigated by the treated greywater coming off from the basin. The conceptual and physical sustainable components are creatively integrated in the grotto-like space.

仕様

The entry is a renovated toilet at MU level of TaiKoo Hui shopping mall, with existing 12 basins, 8 cubicles, 20 urinals and a disabled toilet. The renovated toilet keeps the existing provision at a floor area of 135 sqm, integrated with the bright grotto concept and environmental friendly elements.
