デザインコンセプト

The design links two houses of different periods and styles as one, spatially, aesthetically and spiritually, and keep each identity for the two generations. It opens up, connects, adds arts & nature.

背景

The original houses are 10 and 50-year-old for a family of six. Renovation is required to link the two houses as one yet reserving habitat of the the parents and children, and to face-lift. The major challenges are the houses varying styles and conditions, and their being segregated horizontally by the existing long pool, and vertically by a 3m level change between their living room floors.

デザイナーの想い

We aim at a design solution that offers a revamped new living spaces out of the existing buildings and rooted in their history. It is intended to set as an example for renovation that can be achieved by minimal works, reduction, and careful planning on modification and preservation-a sustainable approach that avoid excessive addition, unnecessary works, and construction waste.

企画・開発の意義

The original house have much potential to explore, and identities to preserve. This leads to a holistic approach to identify all constraints, strategic and conscious decisions on demolition/modification. The design reveals the spatial interest, maximizes area usage, and enhance spatial flow by the idea of reduction and connection. The result is a spacious, thorough living space.

創意工夫

The design face lift by major reduction and minimum reduction, to open up and give a new layering of spaces and lives. Landscape plinths are demolished for a generous Middle Garden of the site depth. The pool, with enclosing walls taken down, overflow and form a water backdrop. A new steel bridge links at second level, floats above the Garden. The two houses are linked as one, centering on the garden and bridge. Inside, the GROUND datum light stone flooring extends to landscape, flowing water as backdrop for dining. Timber stairs lead to the HOME datum above. The houses overlook each other like neighbors in a town. Stairs are expressed as a gallery of form and light. The structure is manipulated with new balconies and windows openings to form continuous lines or patches of forms.
