The main street running through this area of redevelopment in Shinjuku is lined with new buildings, albeit mostly narrow, plain-looking apartments with monotonous rows of balconies. To break the stereotypical design of multi-residential structures, we designed a façade conveying the spirit of the community. For the balcony railings, we incorporated wood elements reminiscent of wood-frame houses, as well as the concrete, metal, and glass symbolic of modern architecture. The design achieves the look of a neat and orderly block similar to the composition of a Piet Mondrian painting.
