The aims are to revitalize the former police married quarters, promote creative industries and create quality public open space.

背景

The PMQ development was one of the projects under "Conserving Central" initiated by the Hong Kong Government to conserve key heritage buildings that witnessed the development of Central that has long been the business centre of Hong Kong.

The design needs to respect the spirit of the place which is characterized by the nearby art and antique shops. The PMQ houses exhibition areas and atelia to reinforce that character, and other uses such as quality restaurants and open space to attract visitors to this precinct. Local connection is improved by the PMQ entrances open to the surrounding neighborhood at various heights.

In PMQ, corridors and courtyards are exhibition areas at their own right. They connect different workshops, making them ideal places for exchange of ideas. Visitors have close dialogue with artists and artworks within touch, or join workshop activities they happen to encounter at these semi-public spaces. This relaxed environment opened up the door of creative industries to all walks of lives.

The conservation approach for the PMQ building is ambitious and yet subtle.Other than being restored to a better condition of repair, the changes to the building and its streetscape is almost unnoticeable to its neighborhoods as the alterations are mostly introverted, harmonious with its original fabric and surrounding environment. Also, the additions and upgrade on the building envelope are mostly transparent to allow admission of natural light and to ensure visual connection with neighborhoods.
