Outline

Renovation of a railway station with a 40-year-old reinforced concrete station building by the Shimanto River. The aim was to create a design that would fit the needs of the next generation, considering the current circumstances of public transportation and a regional city from the user’s view. To expand effective space without increasing the building area, ticket gates were removed and part of the platform was remodeled to become a waiting area. At stations, strangers are packed close to each other, so they watch and are watched by each other. Lighting effects were provided to make people look more attractive, creating a space value unique to train stations. Moreover, information, such as that on notices and signs that can otherwise be confusing, has been assigned clear priorities, and rules were created so that people affiliated with the station can maintain the quality of the space continuously.

Evaluation

As centralized authority is devolved to the regions, the regions are still trying to feel their way to autonomy through trial and error. That's because it is not so easy to overcome the sense of values created by the central government. The renovation of Nakamura Station on the Kuroshio Railway has the kind of comfortable and attractive atmosphere that instantly transforms this anxiety. Looking at the completed Nakamura Station is like enjoying the things that one can enjoy only on a regional railway. It can also be perceived as small and medium railways' challenge to the major railway companies. Users naturally find themselves truly enjoying this space. Probably the most important things are an expansive vision, a bit of bravery, and the existence of clients who allow these attitudes. Nakamura Station gives the hope to the entire country.
