Outline

5 LINKS is a folding bicycle that can be ridden just like a regular bicycle but can be folded and unfolded easily. When it is folded, there is no need to carry it on one’s shoulders; it can be easily pulled and moved using its own wheels. It is easy to load on to public transportation such as trains, buses, airplanes and boats so that it is easy to travel to a wider range of destinations than ordinary bicycles can cover. Moreover, things can be carried on the bicycle rack while riding and also while it is folded and pulled or moved, so it can be used just like a traveler’s carrying cart. In short, it is a new mode of transportation designed in advance on the assumption it will be used with public transportation, and it is good for the health and also environmentally friendly.

Evaluation

Many bicycles like this can be simply "fold up," but they are hard to carry around in folded up, so it is only after buying one that customers realize they don't really intend to"fold up" at all. The 5 LINKS, on the other hand, was built by limit design to take only about as much space when folded as one person standing. The two wheels act as casters that allow the folded bicycle to be pulled along, which is good news to women and older people with limited strength. Designed with a unique basic frame, which is irregularly shaped in cross-section, it has a wonderful design as a simple and stylish town bike. Such an admirable result from a new product development initiative bringing together small and medium enterprises from different industries with different characteristics is sure to give hope to other small and medium businesses that are battling the economic downturn in Japan.
