Commercial facilities constructed on the vacant track site of the Odakyu Line that was created by the undergrounding in the Shimokitazawa area. Normally, it would be a large-scale commercial facility in one lot; however, it has been divided into small detached houses that are typical in Shimokitazawa, thereby realizing a group of small stores close to human scale. This method of dividing into small volumes enhances not only landscape continuity with the local community but also possibilities of participation by owners and visitors in creating an environment in which we found the meaning of this project as a bottom-up urban development unique to Shimokitazawa. In addition to being of a small scale affordable for ordinary people, the facilities are, with its easily changeable structure unique to conventional wooden construction, designed to incorporate the "living town process” where the living environment changes with the participation of each individual as a hardware mechanism. The architect is also involved in operation of the facilities, and is actively involved in this urban development from both hardware and software aspects, and we highly appreciate it as an opportunity to cultivate abilities of architects of the next generation.
