概要

IKEA Japan Co., Ltd., a home furnishing company born in Sweden with the vision "to create a better everyday life for the many people," has collaborated with computer vision company Jido Inc. to create an app exclusively for the IKEA Harajuku shop which opened in June. Using your iPhone's camera, you can create a digital layer with Augmented Reality and enjoy an interactive shopping experience.

背景

During our research we found that many customers already using their phones to take picture in IKEA stores. They are mainly taking pictures of the product tags as they contains most of the important information such as names/price/article numbers; all items which a customer cannot discover just by looking at the appearance of a product. With Jido's ability to detect products in 3D just from a smartphone camera, we want to create an experience that allows customers to easily learn about products and browse what they are curious about, simply raising the phone and pointing it at a piece of furniture.

経緯とその成果

Augmented Reality is a brand new medium for most consumers. It was critical to establish an intuitive set of interfaces for them to easily navigate without becoming confused by the new technology. Since this app is designed for people who are in an IKEA store, we also don't want to interrupt their engagement with the store and products around them. In the IKEA Harajuku app, we designed and built a user interface architecture that co-exists on screen space and world space so their interaction with the real world is never broken. The user experience allows shoppers to finish their tasks swiftly and get back to the store.

IKEA Harajuku is designed and built for customers in IKEA Harajuku flagship store. This app will be running on iOS devices (iPhone 6s and up). Users would be using this app while browsing and shopping in the IKEA Harajuku retail store.

審査委員の評価

新しい技術を使ったデザインで、一般に利用できる円滑かつ楽しい経験を生み出すのは難しいことだが、このIKEAシステムは非常に良い成功例だ。興味を持つ顧客を増やすだけでなく、現代の小売システムを再編させる最初の一歩となる。このプラットフォーム上や周辺でどんな進展が見られるのか楽しみだ。
