Outline: In front of Tajimi Station, the new square has been made with a big amount of water (200 L / sec) by bringing once abandoned via duct in. The idea is to make a station area to be a place to stay for the citizens, instead of a place just to get on and off the train to commute. In that sense, this square will be the one which let the center of the city to be the place to gather once again.

Evaluation

This plaza casts new light on approaches to station plazas in provincial cities. In particular, we highly commended the following three points. 1. It achieves an outstanding balance between approaches to enclosure and openings into the space, enabling diverse places to exist simultaneously and thereby making it a place in which people can feel comfortable spending time every day, even if they are alone. 2. The memory of the agricultural irrigation channels that facilitated the region’s development has been retained and utilized, with an abundance of water creating a space conducive to rest and relaxation. 3. Placing the traffic square to one side, the design creates a pedestrian area in front of the station that runs all the way to the city office’s branch office and commercial facilities.
