Memory Salvage is a project in Yamamoto Town, Miyagi to return pictures of unknown origin, found after being washed away by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, to their rightful owners using information technology. About 750,000 pictures were collected by the Self-Defense Forces, etc. and all the pictures were cleaned and digitized by cameramen in cooperation with civil volunteers. A way to find lost pictures has been devised by using technology such as facial recognition and compiling a database. A permanent site where we return photos has been established, and returning sessions have also been held in temporary dwellings. Clues about the original owners are collected mainly from the elderly and are fed back to the database. A new community for the future will be developed by sharing the memories in those pictures among the town residents.
