Good Design Award consists of Good Design Award together with Good Design Grand Award, Good Design Gold Award, and Good Focus Awards selected from all award winners.
Good Design Award is presented to entries recognized as excellent designs from among all screened items, and then 100 winners with superior designs are chosen as Good Design Best100.
Next, the Judging Committee chooses winners of Good Design Gold Award and Good Focus Awards as well as candidates for Good Design Grand Award (aka Finalist) from the Good Design Best100.
The winner of Good Design Grand Award is chosen from the finalists for that award voting by the judges, Good Design award winners, and others.
See here for details of the types of awards.

Concept of entry categories
With the advancement of an information-technology society, many subjects of design are shifting toward comprehensive total design that includes not just practical, tangible form but also a wide range of systems, structures, and other intangibles for maintaining various relations. As a result, it is expected that for numerous entries it will be difficult to choose a single category for entry.
In screening of the Good Design Award, the entry category is considered a statement by the applicant regarding the point of view from which the subject entry should be judged. Accordingly, applicants are requested to choose entry categories reflecting the perspectives that they would like to stress most for their entries.
However, during the screening process an entry may be judged as part of a unit that differs from the chosen category, as deemed appropriate by the Judging Committee.

The Good Design Award considers design to be the act of thinking chiefly about human beings at all times, identifying goals, and planning and realizing those goals. Accordingly, screening of the Good Design Award is conducted by asking about past developments, such as the backgrounds and processes of entry designs, observing the actual entry in person, and asking whether the design can be expected to enrich live and society from the perspective of the near future.
Screening perspectives
Screening of the Good Design Award stresses whether a subject entry design can be expected to serve as a positive model in the society of the future. For this reason, screening is based on comprehensive, balanced judgment from the following viewpoints of whether the subject entry represents a good design based on multifaceted thinking from a wide range of perspectives.
Human perspective
- Whether due considerations, including usability, understandability, and friendliness, etc., are given to users
- Whether various considerations, including safety, security, environment, physically weak persons, etc., are given to maintain the credibility
- Whether the design gains sympathy of users
- Whether the design has attractiveness and induces users’ creativity
Industrial perspective
- Whether issues are skillfully solved by using new technology and materials or through creativity
- Whether the item is reasonably designed or planned with appropriate technology, method, and quality
- Whether the item contributes to the creation of new industry or business
Social perspective
- Whether the item contributes to the creation of new culture, such as a new method, lifestyle, communication, etc.
- Whether the item contributes to the realization of the sustainable society
- Whether the item suggests new value, such as a new method, concept, style, etc. to society
Time perspective
- Whether the item puts past contexts and accumulated achievements to propose new value.
- Whether the item proposes a highly sustainable solution from medium- and long-term perspectives.
- Whether the item represents continual improvements in accordance with the times.
Screening process
The screening for the Good Design Award is conducted through various processes. Regarding these processes, we release the "Judges' Tutorial Book" which is distributed to the judges for the purpose of increasing the credibility of the screening. Please refer to the item below.
2020 Focused Issues
Focused Issues is an attempt to explore and show the potential social impact of design, through the lens of Good Design Award.
With the increasing expectation for the potential roles of design in solving social issues, Good Design Award has recognized variously valuable designs, from those that directly lead to solutions, those equipped with elements and possibilities that contribute to problem solving, to designs that have promising power to build the society to come. By interpreting the intentions embedded in such designs and manifesting their significance, Focused Issues aims to raise the presence of design in our society.
Focused Issues Directors are appointed from the jury members of Good Design Award. Serving as jury members at same time, directors will carry out the screening in light of the themes that they are in charge of. In this year, directors set the following themes from their own perspectives, considering the current situation of design and social conditions. During the process, they will also have conversations with the designers and other jury members, to identify the point of the design and depict the perspectives from which the design can be seen clearly and thoroughly. The output will be verbalized in Focused Issues and be widely transmitted to the public, as the remarks of the Directors and the keywords of Good Design Award.

Design for weaving systems together
Yuki UchidaIn a mature society like Japan, we need to take a fresh look at various existing resources, including culture, customs, and people, so that we can create new value for the next generation. At the same time, the coronavirus crisis has brought an acute awareness of the degree to which existing systems have become warped throughout society, with approaches to producing goods, social systems, and community networks becoming unsustainable. Now would seem to be exactly the right time to think about restructuring systems by combining new cultures and technologies.
I hope that we can boost the potential of design that enables a diverse array of people to continually produce new value together, while cultivating the environment we have now, combining different systems with each other, and constantly updating them. -
Design for expanding relationships
Yasuyuki KawanishiOne of the questions that design is expected to answer is “Can it solve problems?” This point is crucial to us in maintaining cultured lives and our very existence. Many issues that are hard to tackle singlehandedly can be solved if large numbers of people and groups gradually reach out and create a broader network of relationships. However, it is very difficult to ensure the sustainability required to make even more people notice issues, capture their interest and attention, and keep reaching out to others. That is where design is expected to help. Design that serves as a means of solving problems that cannot be dealt with by the economy or politics is "Design for expanding relationships."

Design for creating a place for distanced people
Yuma HaradaSince the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic, I have begun to think that we need to be bolder and more sensitive in our thinking about not only spaces accessible to anyone, but also everything from smaller places that bring individuals together to those that forge links between minorities or people with specific interests. This is the kind of design that supports the lives of people who are not so visible to those on the outside, including elderly people, people with disabilities, and children needing protective care. It was this that inspired the phrase “Design for creating a place for distanced people.” There is a world in which we try to protect what is familiar and close to us and one in which people argue with strangers on social media. I want to think about the places where we live our lives in a complex world where facts are intermingled with fakes.

Design for improving the environment
Kaie MurakamiWith economic activity having been brought to a standstill worldwide by the coronavirus crisis, all of humanity has had to change most of our behaviors. However, at the same time, the pandemic has provided us with glimpses of what a world in which environmental problems had been remedied would look like, such as the restoration of the emerald green hue of Venice’s canals and the air quality improvements in India that enabled the Himalayas to be seen clearly from 200 km away for the first time in decades. According to British environmental publication Carbon Brief, greenhouse gas emissions fell by 1.6 billion tons year on year in 2020 (equivalent to reducing the number of cars by about 350 million). However, this falls far short of the goal of cutting emissions by 2.2 billion tons per year, which is the benchmark for stemming the tide of dangerous climate change. Not only the economy, but also the venues for creation and production are shifting into virtual spaces, where they had previously been dependent on physical locations, with the intervention of online production set to accelerate the implementation of mechanisms designed with environmental problems in mind. I want to undertake an in-depth examination of new mechanisms and approaches to physical objects in an age like this.

Design serving as a guidepost pointing the way to a new society
Yoshihiko YamasakaA matter of concern for every single person across the globe, the novel coronavirus is the first common threat to be experienced by humanity. Even people who had merely observed wars, disasters, and nuclear power plant accidents from the sidelines have now been given an opportunity to take a look at the way they live by something that affects them directly. Once the prevailing wisdom is no longer applicable, what directions and routes will people take? What kind of future will they face? The SDGs are important, of course, aren’t they? Which way will society and people move? What paths will they take? It is precisely at a time when what lies ahead is unclear that we need a compass. I believe that design serving as a guidepost will give us the courage to embark on our journey toward the future.
