Thank you very much for coming to the Good Design Exhibition. This marks the first time in the long history of the Good Design Award that we have been able to introduce all of the designs that have received an award in the same year. As the organizer, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of the recipients of the Good Design Award and to everyone who has demonstrated their understanding of the goal of this endeavor and has become actively involved in it. For the 2012 awards, judging took place on the basis of the theme “beauty and ease of use”, which was set by Mr. Naoto Fukasawa, Chairman of the Judging Committee, with the objective of ensuring the significance of design in an ever-changing society. The 1,108 good designs selected as a result are assembled here in this hall. Used in an increasingly diverse range of situations, from products and buildings to applications and communication media, and even initiatives aimed at post-disaster reconstruction, design is becoming a motive force driving the progress of society. Viewing every exhibit, you will doubtless come to understand that good design is making a significant contribution in all aspects of our lives. I hope that this event will inspire in a wider audience a real understanding of the value of the brilliant designs highlighted by the Good Design Award.

President, Japan Institute of Design Promotion

The Good Design Exhibition 2012 displays and introduces the designs that have received a Good Design Award this year. While being a forum for showing a wider audience the fruits of the companies and designers that have received a Good Design Award, I hope that this will also be a place in which visitors will gain an understanding of the significance of the process of design that is being deployed in a variety of fields.
Amid the emergence of hitherto-unseen relationships between people and things and new mechanisms for this, not to mention changes in society and industry, what kind of designs can we describe as good designs that enrich our lives? In judging this year’s Good Design Award, we sought to interpret applied design from the perspective of the interaction between people and things and the mechanisms through which this takes place. The contemporary design values identified through this viewpoint are symbolized in particular by the designs selected for inclusion in the new category Good Design Best 100. I hope that these 1,108 works that have received the Good Design Award will enable you to comprehend the tremendous power of design.

Chairman of the Judging Committee, Good Design Award 2012
Naoto Fukasawa
