Outline: Project PLATEAU is a project led by The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to develop, utilize, and open data on 3D City Models. The project aims to create use cases in various fields such as urban planning, disaster prevention policy, and new services by developing 3D City Models that reproduce the real urban space in cyberspace and using it.

Evaluation

Although to date maps and 3D data have been provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), every time they have been provided, the open data was disclosed in a format that was neither common standards nor the world standards. The value of this project is that all the existing data, including reedited data, were integrated in the international standard, CityGML format, so that the world's largest 3D city database was launched at once. In addition, this project is one of the most expressive ones among the open data projects launched in Japan so far, running a program that encourages the use of data from various angles and a viewer for visualization. We would like this project to become a great milestone showing that Japanese Government policy can make such an amazing design.
