Suntory has declared that it will use only recycled or plant-derived materials for all PET bottles used globally by 2030 and achieve zero use of virgin petroleum-based materials. We were highly impressed by the way in which Suntory overcame a difficult process of coordination within the company to issue an industry-leading declaration with an explicit time frame and figure, and also by the fact that it not only incorporates a design for the whole of the PET bottle cycle—including their manufacture, use, collection, and recycling—but also encompasses the creation of a recycling mechanism for other countries, where PET recycling rates are low. We hope that this initiative tapping into Japan’s know-how concerning high PET bottle recycling rates will have a global impact.
