Outline: Preserving the Important Cultural Property as the first department store, the urban design with new prosperous core contributes to enjoyable happy urban life. Built in 1933, Nihombashi Takashimaya has repeated extensions, and now stretches into four city blocks with circulation to underground ward road, street corner park and roof garden spanning blocks, creating new strolling experiences.

Evaluation

This project involved the major redevelopment of an important cultural property for the 21st century, based on Teitaro Takahashi’s original design for the department store, which opened in 1933, and also subsequent additions by Togo Murano. While respecting the past design and composition, this project reinterpreted them for the modern day and added further capacity, as well as improving the overall accessibility by linking the old and new buildings at the rooftop level and also installing a large, glass-roofed footpath between them. We admired the way in which this redevelopment created the kind of new urban context that is only possible with a huge project. By adding modern elements, the architects have brought to fruition a design that enables people to rediscover the allure of the main building, while enjoying the experience of walking around the department store, both indoors and out.
