Outline

The solar town Fuchu is made up of 16 residential houses.Realizing environmental-friendly housing with long life and maximum use of natural energy were the must, but also we wanted residents to enjoy nature to maximum.Houses were arranged along sides of a common space called a garden path which were filled with abundant greeneries, and as a result, the place became the gathering spot to all.

Evaluation

This project demonstrated the potential for a housing complex comprising single dwellings to create an enriching environment. While each house has a simple rectangular shape, they are laid out on their long, thin sites at a slight angle, forming irregularly shaped garden paths called commons in the middle. Simple, yet achieving maximum effectiveness, this design technique is admirable in its own right, but one should also not overlook the fact that easement—a form of private land whose public use is permitted, creating an area that is neither entirely private nor fully public—functions effectively here. Almost a decade since Solar Town Fuchu was built, its abundant greenery and the sense of community that has been fostered therein speaks volumes about the success of this project.
