概要

The world's first braille smartwatch, the Dot Watch is an entry device that marks the start of braille innovation. Powered by Dot's patented Active braille technology, the Dot Watch is comprised of moving braille cells that respond to touch. Pair the watch to a smartphone, and its users can tell time, date and receive notifications in real time. Given the luxuries of our Information Age, this may not seem like a big deal, but for the first time ever, deaf-blind and visually impaired individuals will be able to feel the seconds of time tick beneath their fingertips.

デザインコンセプト

Dot is inclusive.

背景

The idea took off when Eric Kim, our founder and CEO, encountered a blind classmate hauling a large set of books during his study at the university of Washington. Learning that they are braille textbooks, Eric, over time, decided to create products that deaf-blind and visually impaired individuals can use with ease. While the average cost of braille devices ranges form $3,000 to $15,000, the Dot Watch is affordable, and 10 times smaller than existing braille technologies. With the same technology used to power our Dot Watch, we are currently developing the "Dot Pad," a tactile braille reader with a bigger screen. In the future, we hope that the Dot Pad will take place of existing braille books, reduce their cost and volume, and make braille education much more accessible.

デザイナーの想い

Through design, we wanted to change the face of traditional braille devices and create an object of desire. A smartwatch that anyone would consider innovative and sophisticated to own. Although braille is often perceived as a negative term within its community, it becomes a beautiful relief form from a design perspective. An architectural system of dots embossed on a pure, white background, a sentence in braille appears as an intricate landscape, like footprints marked in snow. Through the tactility of the watch and the embossed text within the user manual, the inherent beauty of braille is accentuated through the Dot Watch and its packaging. With all preconceptions removed, we hope that the world will rediscover braille under a new light.
