概要

The words that can best describe this WebOS TV interface are 'uniqueness' and 'simplicity'. Many smart TVs in the market seem to be competing against each other to show as much content as possible on the screen. This WebOS smart TV was designed with the slogan, "Make TV Simple Again" so that the consumers can simply enjoy the TV and not study it. Unnecessary design clutter was removed and a flat and stylish design was used to express uniqueness and simplicity.

デザインコンセプト

'Humor' and 'simplicity'. The features which are essential but difficult to use were given elements of fun (using a mascot), and the other features were simplified for maximum ease of use.

背景

Many smart TV manufacturers are engaged in complicated spec wars, and the consumers are forced to study TV screens with unnecessarily complicated content. There is an increasing necessity to return to the original purpose of the TV, so that the consumers can enjoy the TV content with maximum ease and comfort.

デザイナーの想い

We had a message for consumers who are weary of complicated smart TVs. We wanted them to simply relax on their couch and enjoy the TV. It should be easy to enjoy the TV, because we have taken care of all difficult things. The TV content takes precedence over the UI. We decided to return to basics and keep the fundamental principles for the benefit of our consumers and the world.

企画・開発の意義

Considering the consumer's perspective, our goal was to propagate convenience of the smart interface to a wide range of consumers so that everyone can use smart TVs without difficulty. Also, from the manufacturer's perspective, the WebOS ecosystem can be expected to help embrace and expand the market.

創意工夫

We live in an age of irony where simplicity itself means uniqueness. It was our take on uniqueness to step away from the notion of complicated smart TV designs and pursue simplicity. Our uniqueness is emphasized in three main ways: Firstly, we used slants. Our use of slants will shock everyone in the world of TV GUI which is full of squares and rectangles. Secondly, we used typographic design. Everyone would agree that typeface is the basis of graphic design. We combined typeface-based design with Gestalt laws to create a unique design. Thirdly, we used a mascot. A unique mascot called 'Bean Bird' appears to walk the user through difficult functions, making the TV experience more interesting and fun.
