概要

Urban Resort Mansion is a privately owned mansion sited in Taichung-a city of natural, cultural, historical, and artistic importance. It is principally designed with the theme of "urban resort" in which local features are incorporated in modern engineering works to design the entire space holistically. The designer makes keen observations of nature and draws from local elements in his spatial language, creating a reviving space that is always full of life. A dialogue between nature and man is built into the making of the "architecture that breathes".

The site is located in Zuigutao, a major rice production area in central Taiwan. Stepping over large slates toward entrance feels like crossing a small river in Zuigutao hopping on stones in water.

背景

'Original design' is the major appeal of this project, where many recyclable, reusable materials are utilised to reduce the amount of non-Eco building materials and decrease construction working hours. The use of environmentally friendly materials starts a new trend in spatial design by bringing to the fore energy-saving issues and raising societal awareness and discussions in the matter.

Intimate relations between consecutive spaces are established with the succession of a large, extensive stone slate wall, an edgeless overflow pool, trees and long spaces, thereby adding elements of the environment, humanity and history, as well as highlighting the connection between nature and architecture.

Architectural forms are transformed from the environment in the fusion of Eastern elements in a structurally Western spatial design. Incorporating the sequential composition in Western architecture and Eastern design principle of borrowed scenery to create a fusion of nature with Eastern and Western cultures, this project is ambitiously forging the cutting edge new Asian style.

Ideas from traditional mud brick houses, vertical imagery of Makino Bamboo Forest, and 'plough' the rusted iron board is used for its mottled, metallic feel and colour, showing traces of time and echoing the red soil. The designer reuses materials available locally and applies ecological engineering methods. To achieve energy saving while regulating temperature, the main structure is built with recycled steel plates mixed with light metal; two layers of heat-insulating material is placed in roofing board; and a good number of trees are planted. Remains of quarry are used to make the huge slate stone wall. The work area is centred around the pool where west bound wind brings much water vapour while helps regulate temperature. Reflected light enables energy-saving lighting for the interior.
