Outline

The new company building of Nara City’s Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, a long-established Nara bleached cloth store that has a history of about 300 years. It has developed with the concept of "a future Machiya (town house)" where people work as if they are living in it. Mr. Manabu Mizuno, representative of Good Design Company, was the art director. The design was done by the architect Yasutaka Yoshimura. The building has the functions of an office, a warehouse and a showroom. It is a one-story building, colorful and color-coded by function, and from the outside looks like six side-by-side homes, so it blends into the neighboring residential area without standing out. The inside is connected by wide openings, but there is a difference in levels between adjacent parts. The office area utilizes the level difference to take in more light, making the space brighter. It is an exceptional space that has both the bustle of the town and the calmness of a residence.

Evaluation

A brand that is reviving traditional Japanese objects in the present day and architectural design that takes a modern pop art approach to old-style townhouses have been brought splendidly into synch, serving as an excellent example of architectural design contributing to the improvement of a corporate image. This space, which looks like a group of traditional 'nagaya townhouses', can be experienced as a unified space, even as it cleverly segments the workplace and the warehouse, fully informing us of the vitality of this new headquarters. In its ability to send a message to the surrounding area, its overall appearance and architectural details, the design of its furniture, and other features, it carries out a consistent motif throughout, both on an urban scale and on the level of furnishings. We gave it high marks for being fun to look and allowing us to experience the possibilities of design in a variety of dimensions.
